By Mickalene Thomas
Published by Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, in consortium with Benefit Print Project on the occasion of the pioneering artist’s first solo presentation in a UK public art gallery, this project is exemplary of Mickalene Thomas’s most iconic work. The dazzling project is cut and assembled by hand, and comprises multiple techniques and processes, such as two-and-a-half- and three-dimensional printing and hand-stenciling. Brilliant rhinestones, hand-applied acrylic pearls, metallic card stock, sparkly glitter papers, and collaged pearlescent and holographic card stock make up the luxurious surface, which recontextualizes canonical nineteenth-century paintings by French artists Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Édouard Manet and is based on a painting of the same name that features prominently in the exhibition.
